Rachmaninoff, Concerto No. 2

A long-time artistic partner of the orchestra—he was involved with it in selecting the Steinway of the Salle Philharmonique in Hamburg—the Argentine pianist Nelson Goerner returns to the OPRL in Rachmaninoff’s Second Concerto, a burning work in which virtuosity serves a broad, radiant and deeply Russian lyricism. Originally conceived for dance before becoming a symphonic fresco, Florent Schmitt’s La tragédie de Salomé (1912) combines the decadent legacy of Symbolism, the orchestral refinement of Debussy, and a rhythmic energy that anticipates the foundations of modernism, one year before The Rite of Spring. Its orientalising atmospheres are sumptuous, and Salome emerges as the sonic embodiment of desire and fate, magnificently expressed in every orchestral tension.
