Quartet in chiaroscuro
Founded in 2025 within the OPRL, the Andriesii Quartet opens the concert with Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 11, an intense and tormented work. Sketched in 1810, it was composed during a difficult period in the composer’s life, marked by romantic disappointments and deep inner turmoil. Beethoven himself described it as a Quartetto serioso, reflecting the raw emotion that runs through the piece. A shift in atmosphere follows with Debussy’s only String Quartet, composed in 1892. A work of full maturity, it reveals a rich sonic imagination, blending ancient and modern influences with exotic colors in a free and radiant style. Finally, in Warmth from Other Suns, Carlos Simon—composer-in-residence at the OPRL—depicts the mass exodus of African Americans fleeing the southern United States between 1916 and 1970.
