From the fjords to the Alps

A champion of Norwegian music, Edvard Grieg only composed two string quartets, the second of which was left unfinished. Quartet No. 1 in G minor was premiered in Cologne on October 29, 1878, by the Heckmann Quartet. After hearing it in Wiesbaden, Franz Liszt was deeply impressed, and set out to promote the work in Rome, where it was very warmly received. The short string quartet Crisantemi (“Chrysanthemums”) was composed by Puccini in 1890 in memory of Amedeo of Savoy, former king of Spain, and includes two themes later used in the final scene of his opera Manon Lescaut. Two unique works performed here by four members of the OPRL: an hour of musical pleasure to brighten up your lunchtime!
