Tchaïkovski, La Pathétique
An autobiographical symphony, Tchaikovsky's ‘Pathétique’ evokes a socially impossible love, that of the composer for his nephew ‘Bob’. It mirrors an unparalleled personal drama, in which tragedy and emotion unfold in music of rare intensity. German composer and conductor Manfred Trojahn (born in 1949) was profoundly influenced by his encounters with Ligeti and Rihm. He nurtures a deep passion for French literature, particularly for the work of Paul Valéry, whose texts he now sets to music in his latest creation.
