Beethoven, Eroica

Composed in 2012, the extraordinary Absolute Jest by John Adams, for string quartet and orchestra, draws on half a dozen fragments by Ludwig van Beethoven—notably from his late string quartets—and propels them into an incandescent rhythmic flow, combining exuberant virtuosity, wit, and raw energy. Written between 1803 and 1804, the Symphony No. 3 “Eroica” emerges at the dawn of Romanticism as a groundbreaking work. Initially dedicated to Bonaparte, it soon frees itself from the figure of the triumphant hero. Ludwig van Beethoven shatters the framework of classical form, unfolding a music of tension, trial, and transcendence, in which the symphony becomes the stage for a gripping inner struggle of unprecedented scope.
