Steve Reich, The desert music

Characteristic of the American school through its accessibility, raw energy, rich colours and urban rhythms, Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto (2005) finds in Evelyn Glennie a performer internationally acclaimed for her refined approach to timbre and her stage presence. In contrast, The Desert Music (1983), a cantata for choir and orchestra by Steve Reich, a major figure of minimalism, draws on texts by American poet William Carlos Williams to evoke arid landscapes, the tensions of the modern world, and the struggle for survival after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A hypnotic work, where loops and pulses shape a powerful sonic meditation, here performed by the Brussels Philharmonic.
