Schubert, The Unfinished

Composed in 1822 and forgotten for nearly 40 years before being fortuitously rediscovered among a friend of Schubert, Symphony No. 8 “Unfinished” is limited to two movements, bathed in a continuous flow of shadowy melodies. Between darkness and light, brilliance and melancholy, it reflects a period of emerging depression in its composer, likely at the origin of its incompletion. Dvořák’s Cello Concerto No. 2, written in 1895 during his stay in the United States, unfolds a vast fresco in which nostalgia, homesickness, and the soloist’s inner song permeate the entire orchestra. Two works marked by incompleteness, where music becomes confession.
