OPENING CONCERT TCHAIKOVSKY / SHOSTAKOVICH
It is with Tchaikovsky’s inimitable First Piano Concerto that Lionel Bringuier opens his season: a sovereign work whose untamed fervor, its Cossack fire igniting brass and strings, and its popular melodies give an irresistible flavor to the “king of concertos.” The Uzbek pianist Behzod Abduraimov, renowned for his phenomenal virtuosity, promises a dazzling interpretation. Shostakovich’s all-too-rare Sixth Symphony (1939), in three asymmetrical movements, subverts the classical model of the Soviet symphony.
