European Tour: Symphonie fantastique
Composed in 1868, Saint-Saëns’s Piano Concerto No. 2 plays with forms and styles: a Bach-like opening, a scherzo of distinctly Parisian elegance, and a dazzling final rush in the spirit of Offenbach. A spirit of clarity and irony ideally suited to pianist Simon Trpčeski. In contrast, Lionel Bringuier conducts Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, a Romantic manifesto from 1830 that transforms the orchestra into a theatre of obsessive love, pastoral reverie, military fury, and ultimately a hallucinatory, phantasmagorical finale.
