Argentina : The Edge of tango
While Astor Piazzolla is widely regarded as the creator of tango nuevo, less is known about another pioneer, Eduardo Rovira, also born in the 1920s. Revolutionising tango through independent and avant-garde approaches, the two bandoneon players met only twice. Rovira regarded Piazzolla as an admirable colleague; Piazzolla saw Rovira as a valuable innovator. The Sonico Ensemble revives rare scores from their respective octets, the Octeto Buenos Aires and the Octeto La Plata, in a unique project exploring the very edges (“the edge”) of tango.
