Rachmaninoff, Symphony No. 2

With his Second Symphony, Sergei Rachmaninoff confronts the silence left by the failure of his First. The work does not aim for display but for expansion: elongated melodies, unabashed lyricism, and dense orchestration with a continuous undercurrent of melancholy. From the very first bars, the music unfolds in waves, as the composer establishes an atmosphere of rare intensity. Composer-in-residence Carlos Simon offers a double concerto, an OPRL co-commission, written for international star violinist Hilary Hahn.
