Shostakovich, Concerto No. 1

Written between 1947 and 1948 under the weight of the Stalinist regime, Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 unfolds an extreme tension and striking darkness. Behind formidable virtuosity, carried by the OPRL concertmaster George Tudorache, the violin becomes an inner voice: biting irony and fierce lyricism follow one another up to an implacably intense final passacaglia. With his Symphony No. 1, Brahms confronts the overwhelming shadow of Beethoven. Far from imitating him, he extends his vital momentum and expressive power, forging a work of struggle and transcendence, driven by a dark energy and raw emotion.
