Christmas Concert: Scheherazade

A masterpiece of musical Orientalism, whose popularity spanned the entire 19th century, Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1888) is one of the pinnacles of descriptive music, inspired by the stories of Sinbad, Prince Kalender, and the wondrous heroes of One Thousand and One Nights. Joyful, radiant, and full of beautiful, energetic melodies, the Trumpet Concerto by Joseph Haydn, premiered in Vienna in 1796, is the last jewel written for the instrument in the Classical era and one of the signature pieces of the young German trumpeter Simon Höfele, a leading figure in contemporary trumpet performance.
