OPRL+ Symphonic cinema: Loss, The Planets

After The Firebird, Mahler: The Echo of Being and Daphnis and Chloé, director Lucas van Woerkum turns to Holst’s The Planets, a grand galactic epic reflecting the composer’s fascination with space and astrology, with his new project: Loss. For this new film, whose tempi are perfectly synchronised with the playing of the OPRL musicians, the filmmaker has imagined a story that reopens the great questions of humanity. Performed by Emma Thompson and Greg Wise, Loss immerses us in the inner journey of a soul bidding farewell to earthly life and being accompanied in its transition to the afterlife. The narrative explores loss both from the perspective of those who remain and of the one who departs. The mystery of life after death is rendered in the sumptuous, meticulously crafted aesthetic typical of the Dutch artist.
