Assistant Conductor competition for the 26-27 season
Apply by midnight on Friday 27 March 2026 at the latest.
Audition on Monday 4 May 2026, 9.30 am, at the Salle Philharmonique de Liège (artists’ entrance: 14, rue Forgeur, 4000 Liège – Belgium).
You must be under 35 years of age on 4 May 2026.
You must provide:
- The registration form, properly filled in;
- Proof of identity;
- A Curriculum Vitae;
- A motivation letter in French or English;
- Two videos of the candidate conducting live:
- The total duration of the two videos must not exceed 10 minutes (delete the parts with applause, your entrance, the tuning of the orchestra, bows, etc.);
- The camera angle in the videos must provide a clear face-on view of the candidate;
- The two videos must present different musical styles;
- The videos must have been recorded after 1 January 2024;
- The videos are to be sent via a YouTube link (no submissions on DVD or USB drive);
- The description accompanying each video must contain the candidate’s first name and surname, the date on which the video was recorded, the name of the orchestra, the piece(s) performed, and the name(s) of the soloist(s).
Costs connected to the competition (accommodation, travel, administrative arrangements, scores, etc.) are the sole responsibility of the candidates.
Selection and jury
The candidates who are selected, based on their applications, and called for the audition on Monday 4 May 2026 (maximum 7 candidates) will be informed by Friday 17 April 2026 at the latest.
The results of the audition will be announced on Monday 4 May 2026 after the second round.
The jury is made up of the Music Director Designate Lionel Bringuier, General Director, the leaders (concertmasters), and members of the OPRL. The jury has full control over the decision-making process. Depending on the calibre of the candidates, it may decide to leave the post vacant following the competition.
Remuneration
The conductor selected for the 2026–2027 season will receive a fee for his/her hours working as an assistant at rehearsals and/or concerts, and a fee for the productions that he/she will conduct.
First round:
- Rehearsal (maximum 20 minutes) with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège of the following works:
- TCHAIKOVSKY, Symphony No. 6, 1. Adagio – Allegro non troppo
- BEETHOVEN, Symphony No. 2, 3. Allegro
The instructions for the rehearsal and the choice of extracts will be communicated to the candidates on the day of the competition.
Second round:
- Interview with the jury (in French or English)
